In the context of planning and operating logistics, material flow, or production systems, simulation is typically used to gain insights into the behaviour, the functionality, or the dimensioning of these systems. It is important that the results achieved with the support of simulation can actually be applied for the given tasks and scope of work. Therefore, the standard covers procedures and methods of verification and validation (V&V) that can be used to test the data, the simulation models, and the results for correctness as well as for the appropriateness with respect to the given task and scope. The V&V ranges over all activities, from data acquisition and preparation through the design of simulation models and experiments to the analysis of the generated results. The standard addresses persons who conduct simulation studies or are responsible for the development of simulation models in operational use and who are also responsible for the verification and validation (V&V) of the data, models and results.
