Short description
The standard describes backscatter lidar that is based on elastic scattering. Its mode of operation is being explained and it is shown how reliable results can be obtained. Furthermore, the method characteristics are specified and typical examples of use are shown. This standard also describes the determination of height-resolved profiles of the backscattering of the atmosphere by means of active optical sounding. From the measurement data, characteristics of the atmosphere, such as cloud base, cloud top of optically thin clouds, upper and lower limit and internal structures of particle layers, backscatter coefficient of the particles, and the extinction coefficient can be derived up to several kilometres above ground. Furthermore, depolarisation lidar and multi-wavelength applications are being discussed. This allows the determination of additional parameters. The standard does not address specific features of airborne or satellite-based systems. The specific features of scanning Systems are also not discussed.
