Short description

1.1 In this guide, criteria are established for recording occupational injuries and illnesses to aid in continuously improving management systems; identifying and preventing serious injuries, illnesses, and fatalities; measuring safety performance; evaluating safety programs; and ensuring consistency in international comparisons and benchmarking. The measurement system is intended to be precise, accurate, resistant to manipulation, meaningful for safety evaluations, and suitable for global accountability. 1.2 Objectives of the recording occupational injury and illness guide are: 1.2.1 Establish a standardized and objective framework for recording work-related injuries and illnesses, 1.2.2 Facilitate use of injury and illness rates as a means of evaluating processes designed to control such injuries and illnesses, and 1.2.3 Provide a foundation for meaningful comparison of injury and illness rates across industries and countries. 1.3 In this guide, the definitions and procedures necessary to maintain records of work-related injuries, illnesses, and incidence rates are outlined. 1.4 Key elements of this guide include: 1.4.1 Establishing work relationship criteria, 1.4.2 Defining occupational injuries and illnesses, 1.4.3 Categorizing severity levels of occupational incidents, 1.4.4 Addressing accountability for contractor relationships, and 1.4.5 Specifying methods for calculating injury and illness rates. Note 1: Employees as defined herein for recordkeeping purposes varies from the definition of worker used in ISO 45001 and ANSI/ASSP Z10.0, which addresses management system responsibility. 1.5 Units- The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. This standard is not a substitute for any legally required injury and illness recordkeeping obligations. 1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
