The standard for the new edition of DIN 31636 specifies the romanization of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet into Latin letters. It is characterised as a basic standard and is applicable for any application purpose. The faulty print of the Hebrew letters in DIN 31636:2006-02 necessitated a revision. The revised standard is identical in the reproduction of the basic characters of the alphabet with the transliteration chart of the American Library Association/Library of Congress (ALA-LC) and also adopts the transliteration rules of Hebrew and Yiddish applied there. Above all, it takes into account therewith the development of Modern Hebrew and strives for linkage to international standardisation with the adoption of the Anglo-American rules, which will essentially simplify future data exchange. The Unicode values of Hebraic characters have been newly integrated. The standard has been prepared by the Information and Documentation Standards Committee, Working Committee NABD 1 "Transliteration und Transkription" ("Transliteration and transcription").
