Power cables according to this standard are intended for fixed installation in the electrical systems of ships. The electrical cable specified here is a flexible, unshielded power cable with one or more cores. The shield is provided as reinforcement to improve mechanical resistance to environmental influences. The insulating sheaths are halogen-free; the cable sheath is conventional (MGCG) or halogen-free (MGCH). In terms of their properties they occupy a middle position between the cables in the VG 95218-60 series for military applications (for example on naval vessels) and the corresponding cables in the IEC 60092 series of IEC /SC 18 A, which standardizes marine cables for civilian applications, for example for installation in passenger or cargo ships. Normally, power cables without shielding in accordance with DIN 89158 are used in the electrical systems of watercraft that are also to be used for military purposes in the event of defense (for example, ferries). They are also suitable for offshore applications (oil and gas production platforms and wind turbines). The responsible committee is DIN-NA 132-03-53 AA NA "Kabel für Schiffe" ("Electrical cables for ships").
This document replaces DIN 89158:1998-04 .
