Overview

This Technical Specification has been prepared with the intention of harmonizing efficiency classes for variable speed electric motors worldwide. It covers all types of low-voltage AC electric motors designed for operation at variable speeds within their speed range with constant magnetic flux (base speed range). The scope of this document applies to variable speed rotating electrical machines not covered by IEC 60034-30-1. The document applies only to machines with rated power between 0,12 kW and 1 000 kW, rated voltages above 50 V up to 1 kV, and rated speeds (regardless of the number of pole pairs) from 600 min-1 to 6 000 min-1. Furthermore, the document only applies to machines that are rated for one of the following cooling types (IC4A1A0 (IC410), IC4A1A1 (IC411), IC4A1A6 (IC416) or IC4A1A8 (IC418)) and are suitable for continuous operation at their rated operating point with winding temperature rise within the specified temperature class. The rated ambient temperature of the machines shall be between - 20 °C and + 60 °C, with an operating altitude of up to a maximum of 4 000 m above sea level. Furthermore, the classification only applies to machines that are rated for operation with sinusoidal fundamental frequency current, that are not designed for direct starting (mains), for example permanent magnet synchronous machines, with and without reluctance torque, synchronous reluctance machines with sinusoidal supply and synchronous machines with DC excitation windings. This also includes induction machines that are designed exclusively for operation at variable speeds. The following are excluded from this document: - motors with mechanical commutators; - motors that are completely integrated into the working machine and cannot be tested independently in practice; - brake motors in which the brake is an integral part of the internal motor construction and cannot be removed or operated separately during the motor efficiency test; - submersible motors specially designed to be operated completely immersed in liquids; - fire gas motors with a temperature class above 400 °C; - motors that are only started smoothly via a frequency converter and then operated on a sinusoidal mains supply (these are rated according to IEC 60034-30-1); - motors designed for servo applications. Some motors used for the horizontal, inclined, or vertical transport of goods and persons are specially designed for this purpose. They are often integrated into a machine and are not marketed as individual products. Such motors are excluded. Brake motors with an integrated brake coil in the motor flange are covered by this standard, provided that the motor efficiency can be tested without the losses of the brake. Motors that are excluded from this document may be evaluated as drive systems (PDS) according to IEC 61800-9-2. In this case, the PDS, which consists of the motor and the frequency converter (CDM), is evaluated as IES0, IES1, or IES2. The standard differs from DIN VDE 0530-30-2 (VDE 0530-30-2):2019-02 as follows: a) no changes have been made to the content; b) editorial revision of the document. The document is intended for determining efficiency classes of low-voltage AC motors and provides information on the measurement of efficiency and classification of IE efficiency.
