This document specifies the principles of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and provides general requirements for the use of this technique to determine elements in water, digests of sludges and sediments (for example, digests of water as described in ISO 15587-1 or ISO 15587-2). Generally, the measurement is carried out in water, but gases, vapours or fine particulate matter can be introduced too. This document applies to the use of ICP-MS for aqueous solution analysis. The ultimate determination of the elements is described in a separate International Standard for each series of elements and matrix. The individual clauses of this document refer the user to these guidelines for the basic principles of the method and the configuration of the instrument. This standard differs from DIN EN ISO 17294-1:2007-02 as follows: the Scope has been revised to align it with ISO 17294-2; the document has been revised to reflect the currently available instrumentation used in daily routine practice in many laboratories; the clauses on instrumental equipment and interference from accompanying elements have been updated to reflect the state-of-the-art equipment used to measure elements in accordance with DIN EN ISO 17294-2; the abbreviated terms in Clause 9 have been revised to align them with common terms used in other standards; Table A.1 has been updated. This document EN ISO 17294-1:2024 has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 147 "Water quality" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 230 "Water analysis", the secretariat of which is held by DIN(Germany). The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 119-01-03 AA "Wasseruntersuchung (CEN/TC 230, ISO/TC 147)" ("Water quality (CEN/TC 230, ISO/TC 147)") at DIN Standards Committee Water Practice (NAW).
This document replaces DIN EN ISO 17294-1:2007-02 .
