Short description

The standard describes ground-based, passive microwave remote sensing with microwave radiometers for various atmospheric parameters. It explains the theoretical basis of the application, the technical requirements for the measuring instruments, their qualitative assessment/characterisation, the methodology of information acquisition (including its limitations and errors, but also its advantages and strengths), quality assurance, and the operation of the measuring instruments. The special benefit of microwave radiometers is their all-weather use (even in clouds and rain) as well as their good temporal resolution, which makes them a useful system that can be used almost continuously for e. g. meteorology (numerical weather prediction, research), short-term weather forecasts (civil defence, disaster control), aviation, airports and air safety as well as for pollutant dispersion calculations (air quality/environmental meteorology).
