Short description
The expert recommendation addresses characteristic parameters for assessing imperfections on cutting edges of machining tools. The geometry of the cutting edge has a significant impact on tool life, process stability, and the surface quality of the workpiece. Although industrially established edge-preparation processes (e. g., rounding, homogenization) improve edge performance, they may also introduce local defects such as chipping or increased roughness, which can limit tool efficiency. This expert recommendation provides standardized and practical parameters for the objective evaluation of such imperfections. The scope of application focuses on uncoated cutting edges in a new condition, without wear. Since coatings are generally not used as a purposeful means to define the cutting-edge geometry, evaluation should typically take place prior to coating. If the parameters are applied outside this default condition, the deviation shall be clearly indicated in technical documentation (e. g., drawing, measurement report).
