Overview

The hydraulic conductivity of a water-saturated soil depends on the size, shape, and continuity of the voids, on soil structure, the extent of secondary pores, and the organic matter content, and it may greatly vary depending on the direction of flow, particularly in heterogeneous soils. Hydraulic conductivity is an important value for characterizing a soil's water balance, estimating physicochemical sorption processes, assessing mechanical filtration properties, and evaluating soil susceptibility to erosion as well as its drainability. Hydraulic conductivity can be determined in the field using portable measuring devices. Laboratory methods conducted under comparable and largely constant test conditions are best suited for larger series that allow for statistical validation. When taking samples in the field it is recommended that experts or specialized facilities be involved.
