This European Standard defines requirements for the end of life handling, transportation, storage, sorting and treatment of WEEE household appliances containing volatile fluorocarbons, volatile hydrocarbons, or both. Furthermore, this European Standard only applies to WEEE household appliances that use heat-transfer media other than water, for example, refrigerators, freezers, heat pump tumble dryers, de-humidifiers and portable air conditioners. The main objective of this standard is to reduce environmental influences. This European Standard addresses manufacturers, collective WEEE take-back systems (in the interest or on behalf of manufacturers) and waste treatment facilities. It derives requirements from the best technologies available at the time of publication without prescribing the use of these technologies. The existing version EN 50574:2012 is renumbered EN 50574-1, due to the preparation of a second part of this standard (CLC/prTS 50574-2), which includes measurements of volatile fluorocarbons and volatile hydrocarbons. In the corrected version of DIN EN 50574 (VDE 0042-11)):2013-6, the reference to the requirements of Directive 2002/96/EC has also been removed. The responsible committee is DKE/K 191 "Umweltschutz und Nachhaltigkeit bei Produkten in der Elektrotechnik, Elektronik, Informationstechnik" ("Environmental protection and sustainability for products in electrotechnics, electronics, information technology") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
