This standard describes the different types of damage, the damage characteristics, the causes of damage and the damage processes in the event of damage to ceramic products. It provides a basic guide to identifying possible causes of failure and fracture outcomes. It gives an overview of forms of damage that occur in ceramic materials and explains basic elements of practical fractography. The focus is on causes of failure that occur at room temperature and medium temperatures. The causes of failure that occur primarily at very high temperatures - creep, oxidation, and corrosion - are not described. Damage caused by brittle fracture is therefore primarily described. Particular emphasis is placed on the procedure for identifying fracture initiation.
