Solar thermal energy is a versatile technology that goes far beyond simply heating domestic hot water. It can be used in many areas, for example to support space heating in residential and commercial buildings. It is also used in industry, for example to provide process heat for the manufacture and processing of products. It also makes an important contribution to the energy supply of local and district heating systems by integrating renewable heat sources and replacing fossil fuels. The series of standards VDI 4190 combines standards on various areas of application for solar thermal systems that have already been published in previous years: on solar thermal drinking water heating (VDI 6002, Part 1, Part 2), functional checking and yield rating (VDI 2169) as well as solar process heat (VDI 3988). This standard introduces the basics of solar thermal systems. The following parts describe the special planning and design criteria for the individual areas of application and provide special information on system technology and component selection. In addition, an approach to rough dimensioning for the respective area is developed for each part.
