Guides and standards for the planning, design, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of fire alarm systems are published by many different organizations within Europe. This document serves as a guideline in the preparation, review and revision of such national standards and guides. This Technical Specification is intended to assist in the harmonization of practices and standards on fire alarm systems within Europe. This specification applies to installations intended for the protection of life and/or the protection of property. The specification applies to systems with at least one manual call point or one fire detector. In the event of a fire the systems may provide signals to control ancillary equipment (such as fixed extinguishing systems) and other precautions and actions (such as machinery shutdown). However, this standard does not cover the ancillary services themselves or ancillary circuits to interface with them. This specification does not cover systems combining fire alarm functions with other non-fire related functions. The guidelines do not recommend whether or not an automatic fire detection and/or fire alarm system should be installed in any given premises. In preparing these guidelines it was assumed that they would be used by competent persons. However, guidance is also given to other persons purchasing or using a fire detection and / or fire alarm system. Smoke alarms according to EN 14604 are not fire detection and fire alarm systems. Working Group NA 031-02-01-02 AK "Plannung, Instandhaltung, Montage - SpA zu CEN/TC 72/WG 11" ("Planning, Maintenance, Installation - mirror committee to CEN/TC 72/WG 11") at DIN is responsible for this specification.
