Overview

This document specifies general concepts for "Smart Electrical Connectors" (SmEC). SmECs are basically connectors in accordance with DIN EN 61984 and detail specifications, but additionally provide their digital representation, their asset administration shell (AAS). By using this AAS a digital system can access information or services provided by the SmEC. This can be applied to all lifetime data, including instance data, for example from development to the end of service life. SmECs are described in a series of documents. This document describes general topics such as terms and definitions as well as general and high-level specifications of the AAS. Specifications for the respective application case are described in application-specific SmEC standards. As a basic concept, the connectors described in the application-specific standards are based on and comply with the requirements of DIN EN 61984 and the detail specifications. There are no restrictions on the scope of application of this document. Manufacturers and users apply the contents of this document to achieve cross-vendor functionality and compatibility of asset administration shells.
