E-learning series: Risks and opportunities in an integrated management system
Today, risks and opportunities are a central element of modern management systems - especially in the context of ISO 9001 and integrated management systems (IMS). This e-learning series provides a sound basis for risk-based thinking and shows in a practical way how risks and opportunities can be systematically identified, evaluated and integrated into management systems.

In successive episodes, you will receive a clearly structured overview: from the functioning of an integrated management system to the standard-compliant treatment of risks and opportunities to the concrete classification of risk-based thinking in the context of ISO 9001. IMS expert Dr. Frank Herdmann discusses this with international guests from the ISO committee ISO/TC 262. The focus is not on pure interpretation of the standard, but on understanding the underlying management logic and its practical implementation.

The e-learning series is aimed at quality management and IMS managers, auditors, consultants as well as specialists and managers with previous knowledge of quality management. You benefit from a comprehensible, practice-oriented preparation, gain confidence for audits and management assessments and strengthen your competence in an increasingly relevant subject area - flexible, efficient and internationally compatible.

Early bird advantage:
If you book the e-learning before the last episode is published on October 31, 2026, we will extend your access period until April 30, 2027, so you can use each episode immediately after publication and have access to all episodes for a further 6 months from October.

Dr. Frank Herdmann is an expert in management systems. He advises small and medium-sized companies in the private and public sectors, is chairman of several DIN standards committees and author of various publications, including on compliance and risk management.

Important note on the language version!
All e-learnings in this course are available bilingually in German and English. As Mr. Herdmann is mainly in conversation with international guests, the videos included are only available in the original English language. They are not synchronized or subtitled.

  • Episode 1: Addressing Risks and Opportunities in Management Systems - Introduction
    • The first e-learning in the series provides an introduction to the topic of risks and opportunities in the context of management system standards. In today's dynamic environment, understanding the interplay between risks and opportunities is crucial for effective management. DIN ISO 31000 highlights the impact of uncertainty on organizational objectives and emphasizes the need for a robust framework to navigate these challenges. Additionally, IWA 31 underscores the flexibility inherent in DIN ISO 31000, allowing organizations to adapt their risk management strategies to their specific contexts.
  • Episode 2: The Integrated Management System and Addressing Risks and Opportunities
    • In episode 2, Dr. Frank Herdmann and Dr. Suzanne van Hove provide an overview of the concept of an Integrated Management System. This system integrates all relevant requirements for the organization including those from all applicalbe management system standards. Frank Herdmann and Suzanne van Hove describe the essential steps of planning, implementation, and improvement of an IMS and discuss supporting tools from ISO. - Guest: Dr. Suzanne van Howe
  • Episode 3: Information Security Management and ARO
    • In this e-learning, Dr. Frank Herdmann and Dr. Andreas Wolf explain that information security management not only serves to reduce risks but also promotes organizational stability and development. After this module, you will be able to place the role of the ISO/IEC 27000 family in information security management, distinguish between the standards ISO/IEC 27000, ISO/IEC 27001, and ISO/IEC 27005, explain the significance of the standards for organizations, and describe the interplay of the standards in the context of risks and opportunities. | Guest: Dr. Andreas Wolf
  • Episode 4: Quality Management and ARO
    • In episode 4, Dr. Frank Herdmann and Sam Somerville explain the quality management approach to risk and opportunity. Risks and opportunities frequently emerge as a result of change, highlighting the uncertainty regarding how such changes may impact intended outcomes and uncover potential areas for improvement. While risks are closely linked to uncertainties about results, opportunities are typically identified through shifts in context, needs, technology, or strategy. | Guest: Sam Sommerville
  • Episode 5: Occupational Health and Safety Management and ARO
    • Episode 5 explains how risks and opportunities are addressed in the context of ISO 45001. Risks primarily include workplace accidents, legal violations, and health-related burdens, while opportunities provide possibilities for improving working conditions, enhancing performance, and reducing accidents. | Guest: Leanie DuToit
