The DIN Standards Committee Information and Documentation (NID) is currently responsible for more than 320 national, European and international standards. This scope shows the importance of this area of standardization at a societal level: This provides museums, archives, libraries and institutes with valuable tools for their work.   The 5th edition of the tried and tested compendium of standards includes documents on the construction planning of libraries and archives, the transcription of various alphabets, codes and numbering systems and a document on object-preserving digitization.

  The almost 900-page book contains 26 documents on the topics of terminology, collections management in general, construction and climate in archives and libraries — a key topic of the book —, protective covers and transport as well as paper and cardboard. There is also a list of titles of other relevant standards on microfilming, photo/film, paper/cardboard and preservation of cultural heritage. A total of 13 of the documents have included for the first time, while three other standards have been revised.
