About this product

The health and safety requirements for machinery within the European Union will be subject to the provisions of the new EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 from January 2027. This replaces the previous EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and highlights key innovations, in particular the mandatory performance of a risk assessment. In order to support experts in the efficient implementation of these requirements, the reference book "Risk assessment for machinery with application of harmonized standards" provides clear step-by-step instructions.

It is not only based on the existing legal requirements, but also integrates DIN EN ISO 12100, which was published in January 2025 and contains basic guidelines on risk assessment and risk reduction.

What is a risk assessment and why is it important?

The purpose of a risk assessment is to identify potential hazards in the design, manufacture and use of machinery at an early stage and to mitigate them effectively. The EU Machinery Regulation clearly requires machine manufacturers to systematically analyze risks and apply risk minimization strategies. Consistent implementation not only results in legally compliant documentation, but also helps to reduce liability risks and sustainably increase the safety of users.

This book offers support with:

  • the creation of detailed risk analyses and risk assessments,
  • the consideration of harmonized standards, in particular DIN EN ISO 12100, as well as type C standards,
  • avoiding typical errors and omissions in technical documentation.

Contents at a glance:

The textbook covers all relevant aspects of risk assessment and its practical implementation in a practice-oriented manner. Concrete instructions and additional aids for applying standards are particularly valuable. The central contents include

  • Fundamentals of the Machinery Directive and Machinery Ordinance: legal and normative requirements for safety and health protection standards.
  • Risk assessment steps, incl. Excel templates: Instructions for the systematic creation of risk assessments and implementation of templates.
  • Deepening the role of harmonized type C standards: Strengthening the application of standards as a standard and tips for efficient standards research.
  • Compilation of master risk assessments: Combining existing components with new models.
  • Important GSAs (Essential Health and Safety Requirements): Overview and explanation of the changes brought about by the EU Machinery Regulation.
  • Comparison of relevant standards: Comparisons between the EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 and EN ISO 12100.

Additional appendices provide further information, such as an overview of the most frequently used type B2 standards and protective measures against corruption.

Target groups:

The book is aimed specifically at specialists who bear responsibility in machine development, production or risk management. This includes in particular

  • Designers and engineers who develop machines or systems,
  • Developers who draw up safety concepts and risk reduction strategies,
  • Those responsible for documentation and CE marking,
  • People in risk management or standards research who need sound, practice-oriented support in complying with new regulations.

The detailed and structured approach ensures that both experts and new employees in the field of machine development are prepared quickly and comprehensibly for the new requirements of the regulation.

Conclusion:

With "Risk Assessment for Machinery with Application of Harmonized Standards", experts receive a well-founded reference work that supports them in their daily work and helps them to fully and efficiently implement the legal obligations of the new EU Machinery Regulation. This book serves both as an introduction to the topic and as a valuable practical resource for long-term use.
