About this product

Concrete, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures

DIN 1045-2 specifies requirements for concrete used in concrete, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures. It describes the properties, production, conformity and quality requirements of concrete, thereby providing the basis for the durable and safe execution of concrete structures. The standard implements the requirements of DIN EN 206 at national level and introduces the concept of concrete construction quality classes (BBQ) with the concrete classes BK-N, BK-E and BK-S for the first time.

What is DIN 1045-2 about?

The standard specifies requirements for constituent materials, concrete composition, fresh and hardened concrete properties, production control and conformity assessment. It applies to normal-weight, heavyweight and lightweight concrete used for cast-in-situ structures, precast structures and precast concrete elements. In addition, it defines requirements for durability, exposure classes and quality verification for different areas of application in concrete construction.

Topics covered

  • Requirements for concrete according to DIN EN 206
  • Concrete classes BK-N, BK-E and BK-S
  • Exposure classes and durability of concrete
  • Fresh and hardened concrete properties
  • Compressive strength, density and consistency classes
  • Self-compacting concrete (SCC)
  • Recycled and lightweight aggregates
  • Production control, conformity assessment and certification
  • Concrete families as well as testing and verification methods
  • Requirements for special geotechnical works concretes and high-performance concretes

Practical relevance

DIN 1045-2 is the central basis for the production and use of concrete in building construction, civil engineering and infrastructure construction. It supports structural designers, concrete producers and contractors in clearly specifying concrete properties and ensuring the required quality throughout production, delivery and placement.

The new concrete construction quality classes (BBQ) are particularly relevant because they make it possible to assign technical requirements in a differentiated way. At the same time, the standard provides clear rules for modern concrete technologies such as self-compacting concrete, high-strength concretes and the use of recycled aggregates.

Changes compared with DIN 1045-2:2008-08 and DIN-Fachbericht 100:2010-03

The standard has been fundamentally revised. The most important changes include:

  • national implementation of the current DIN EN 206:2021-06
  • complete integration of the text of DIN EN 206 into the standard
  • introduction of concrete construction quality classes (BBQ) and the concrete classes BK-N, BK-E and BK-S
  • integration of the former DAfStb guideline “Requirements for constituent materials for the production of concrete” into the standard
  • expanded provisions for recycled aggregates, self-compacting concrete and high-performance concretes
  • revision of the requirements for production control, conformity assessment and certification

Target audience

  • Structural designers and civil engineers
  • Concrete producers and ready-mixed concrete plants
  • Testing and inspection bodies
  • Quality managers in the concrete industry
  • Manufacturers of precast concrete elements
  • Specialist planners for building construction, civil engineering and infrastructure construction
  • Experts and certification bodies
  • Construction companies and contractors

Conclusion

DIN 1045-2 is the central basis for concrete in German construction. With the introduction of concrete construction quality classes, the integration of the current DIN EN 206 and expanded provisions for modern concrete technologies, it creates a uniform framework for the production, testing and use of concrete. It therefore supports the safe, durable and quality-assured execution of concrete structures.
