This standard applies for land coverage classifications on the basis of multispectral aerial and satellite picture data produced by digital optical sensors (scan and line scan cameras). These sensors shall meet metrological requirements (radiometric and geometric). This standard does not cover active sensors (radar systems and laser scanners) or hyperspectral scanners. Photogrammetry and remote sensing provide procedures which obtain and process geometrical and thematic information from image data. A variety of sensors (for example, cameras, radars, lasers) are used for recording geo-related image data. In accordance with the objectives of the DIN 18740 standard series, this standard specifies the quality requirements for the classification of optical remote sensing data. DIN 18740-5 deals with three special subjects: - requirements for sensors and recording conditions; - requirements for algorithms and procedures; - accuracy requirements. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 005-03-02 AA "Photogrammetrie und Fernerkundung" ("Photogrammetry and remote sensing") at DIN.
