This standard specifies how the thickness of coatings on base materials on a reference surface is measured using a probe. The method according to this standard can be used for all material combinations where the coating can be removed from the base material without damaging or changing the dimensions of the base material. In general, the method allows the determination of coating thicknesses from 3 µm up to several millimetres. In coating systems, the thickness of the individual layer can only be measured if it is possible to remove the individual layer without damaging the underlying layer or changing its dimensions. This standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 062-01-61 AA "Mess- und Prüfverfahren für metallische und andere anorganische Überzüge" ("Measuring and test methods for metallic and other inorganic coatings") at DIN Standards Committee Materials Testing (NMP).
This document replaces DIN 50933:1987-08 .
