This standard specifies the test procedure using a standard Hull cell and facilitates comparison of the results obtained by different testers. The Hull cell can be used to test the influences of the galvanic working conditions (cathodic current density, temperature) and the electrolyte composition (brightener, wetting agent, impurities, layer thickness distribution) on the properties of the coating. Observation of the coating deposited in the Hull cell provides information on the current density range within which technically useful coatings can be produced at a given temperature and electrolyte composition. If the temperature and cell current are changed within a series of tests, then the shift, narrowing or widening of the current density range can be recorded. The Hull cell in the form described here is not very suitable for testing hard chromium plating. This standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 062-01-61 AA "Mess- und Prüfverfahren für metallische und andere anorganische Überzüge" ("Measuring and test methods for metallic and other inorganic coatings") at DIN Standards Committee Materials Testing (NMP).
