This standard specifies general principles of applying differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to solid and liquid materials. Differential thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry can be used to examine all physical or chemical processes involving a measurable thermal effect and enable the determination of characteristic temperatures and calorific parameters. By means of DTA, transition and reaction temperatures can be determined, while DSC also enables the measurement of heat of transition and reaction, eutectic purity and specific heat capacity. Further information can be obtained by measurements in various atmospheres (gas type and pressure) and at the intrinsic vapour pressure. By means of DSC, measurements can be carried out to determine the reaction kinetics (for example, by varying the heating rate).
