Overview

The standard specifies all dosimetric methods required in the framework of diagnostic radiology. Accordingly, the specifications of this standard apply for the radiography and fluoroscopy, mammography and computed tomography sectors. The dosimetric methods include - the dosimetric methods required in the framework of quality assurance, including acceptance and constancy testing, for measurement of technical state variables of radiology equipment, for instance, the half-value layer, the characteristic dose rate, the dose area product, the dose-length product, the incident dose, the exit dose, the transmission dose, and the detector dose as well as the corresponding dose rates, and - the detection of the organ equivalent doses and effective dose required in the framework of radiation protection, their indirect quantification by documentation of the output variables used for this detection and the measurements for verifying conformance to the diagnostic reference values. Further specifications are made with respect to the diagnostic dosimeters and the uncertainties of the dose determination in diagnostic radiology. In this standard the air kerma, measured in gray (GY), is used as the dose quantity for measurement in the radiation beam. The standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 080-00-01 AA "Dosimetrie" ("Dosimetry") of the Radiology Standards Committee.
