This document has been prepared by Working Committee NA 085-00-05 AA "Rundstahlketten, Einzelteile und Zubehör für die Schifffahrt" ("Round steel link chains, components and accessories for marine purposes") at DIN Standards Committee Round Steel Link Chains (NRK) at the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) e. V. This document applies to long-link, tested, coarse-tolerance round steel link chains of grade 8R in quenched and tempered self-colored surface finish, with a nominal pitch of t = 6 × d, a range for the nominal diameter d, from 9 mm to 16 mm and a working force of 40 kN to 125 kN, as well as for a limited permissible operating temperature of 0 °C to +200 °C. It specifies their dimensions and mechanical properties. Round steel link chains in accordance with this document are preferably used for lashing ISO containers in accordance with ISO 668, among other standards, on both ocean-going vessels and inland waterway vessels. Their general application is specified in ISO 3874. In contrast to other national standards, this document additionally contains Clauses 5, 6, 8, and 10 with the specifications in accordance with the German Product Safety Act (ProdSG), Section 3 Paragraph 2, which transposes European Directive 2001/95/EC "on general product safety" into national law. Since DIN 685-2 has been selected by the German Product Safety Commission (AfPS) of the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) and published in the Joint Ministerial Gazette, it can be assumed that long, tested, coarse-tolerance round steel link chains of grade 8R manufactured in accordance with this document meet the relevant requirements for the safety and health of persons and thus comply with the generally acknowledged rules of technology. The document has been prepared in close collaboration with the relevant department for surface technology and welding at the German social accident insurance institution for the woodworking and metalworking industries. It contains safety specifications by specifying the ratios of operating to production test to breaking stress and also by specifying that all round steel link chains are tested after production. This document is recognized by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and the Seamen's Accident Prevention and Insurance Authority (See-BG). As Det Norske Veritas (DNV) is the only classification society with building regulations and guidelines for the stowage and lashing of containers on seagoing vessels, manufacturers of round steel link chains in accordance with this document shall be approved by GL and have a recognized quality assurance system, for example in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001.
