DIN EN 10088-1 contains the list of stainless steels and provides an overview of chemical compositions, material numbers and steel designations. The standard serves as a central basis for the selection and specification of stainless steels and distinguishes between corrosion-resistant, heat-resistant and creep-resistant steels. It supports designers, materials engineers and users in selecting suitable materials for a wide range of industrial applications.
The standard contains the list of stainless steels specified in European standards and describes their chemical composition as well as their classification according to properties and microstructure types. It also provides international comparison designations and selected physical properties. This makes it an important basis for clear material selection and international comparison of stainless steels.
Stainless steels are used in numerous sectors, including mechanical engineering, plant engineering, energy technology, the chemical industry, food technology and construction. DIN EN 10088-1 supports clear material selection and facilitates comparison between different steel grades. It therefore forms an important basis for design, material specification, procurement and quality assurance.
Particularly relevant are the details on microstructure types, material numbers, chemical compositions and areas of application. The standard thus makes it easier to select suitable stainless steels for corrosive, thermally stressed or highly demanding operating conditions.
The 2024 edition has been updated in several areas. The most important changes include:
DIN EN 10088-1 is the central reference standard for the classification and designation of stainless steels. It provides a comprehensive overview of material numbers, chemical compositions and material properties and supports the standards-compliant selection of suitable steel grades for a wide range of applications.
