Overview

This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. This standard specifies the essential safety requirements applicable to the design and construction of blade granulators and shredders used to reduce the size of products made from plastics and/or rubber. Machines considered in this standard begin at the outer edge of the feeding device/feed opening and end at the discharge area. This standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events when blade granulators and shredders are used as intended and under conditions of misuse that are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer. This standard does not deal with: - equipment for feeding material or discharging processed material that is not an integral part of the machine; - hazards due to the processing of materials which may be hazardous to health, - protective measures to reduce the risks due to ignition of flammable residues in the materials to be shredded, - requirements for local exhaust ventilation systems. This standard contains the German version of prEN 12012-1:2015 prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 145 "Plastics and rubber machines" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The standard differs from DIN EN 12012-1:2010-02 and DIN EN 12012-3:2010-02 as follows: a) DIN EN 12012-1 for granulators and DIN EN 12012-3 for shredders have been combined into a single standard; b) the term "granulator" has been replaced by "shredder"; c) the list of significant hazards in accordance with CEN Guide 414: 2014 has been transferred to an informative annex; d) definition of performance levels for the safety-related parts of the control system according to EN ISO 13849-1: 2008; e) adaptation of the measures relating to access through openings, including measures to prevent unexpected rotation of the rotor(s) when the cutting chamber is open (for example rotor blocking device); f) addition of measures for the discharge area; g) removal of the technical measures relating to hazards from the processing of materials that may be hazardous to health, as these are excluded from the scope of application; h) reduction of the treatment of electrical hazards to a reference to EN 60204-1: 2006; i) consideration of hazards due to the neglect of ergonomic principles; j) adaptation of the assignment of test methods to determine compliance with safety requirements and/or protective measures; k) revision of the annex on noise measurement and noise declaration. National interests in preparation of the standard have been represented by the Committee NA 060-60-14 AA "Shredding machines" in the Technical Section "Plastics and rubber machines" at DIN Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering (NAM). Representatives of the manufacturers and users of granulators and shredders as well as the employers' liability insurance associations were involved in the preparation.
