Overview

This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of the new EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, it is deemed a "harmonized" standard and thus, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so called presumption of conformity). This European Standard is to be used together with EN 13001-1 and EN 13001-2. They specify general conditions, requirements and methods to prevent mechanical hazards of cranes by design and theoretical verification. Specific requirements for particular types of cranes are given in the appropriate European Standard for the particular crane type. The following is a list of significant hazardous situations and hazardous events that could result in risks to persons during intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. Clauses 4 to 8 of this standard are necessary to reduce or eliminate risks associated with the following hazards: a) exceeding the limits of strength (yield, ultimate, fatigue); b) exceeding temperature limits of material or components; c) elastic instability of the crane or its parts (buckling, bulging). This European Standard is not applicable to cranes which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN and serves as reference base for the European Standards for particular crane types. 13001-3-1 deals only with the limit state method in accordance with EN 13001-1. The national interests during the preparation have been represented by steering committee NA 060-22-10 AA "CEN/TC 147, ISO/TC 96 Cranes" at Technical Section "Krane und Hebezeuge" ("Cranes and lifting equipment") of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN, the German Institute for Standardization e. V.
