This document contains DIN EN 1789:2007, including Amendment 1:2010, which has been prepared by CEN/TC 239 "Rescue systems" (secretariat: DIN, Germany), with the participation of German experts of Working Committee NA 053-01-02 "Krankenkraftwagen und deren medizinische und technische Ausstattung" ("Road ambulances and their medical and technical equipment") of the Rescue Services and Hospital Standards Committee (NARK). It updates the European Standard EN 1789:2007 by incorporating the relevant requirements of EU Directive 2007/47/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 September 2007 amending Directives 90/385/EEC of the Council on the approximation of the laws relating to active implantable medical devices and 93/42/EC of the Council concerning medical devices and Directive 98/8/EC concerning the placing of biocidal products on the market (OJ No L 247, 21.9.2007, p. 21). This European Standard specifies requirements, tests and equipment used for the transport and care of patients in road ambulances. It contains requirements for the patient's compartment. This European Standard does not contain requirements for approval and registration of vehicles and the training of the staff. This is the responsibility of the authority/authorities in the country where the ambulance is to be registered. The European Standard is applicable to road ambulances capable of transporting at least one person on a stretcher.
