This European Standard applies to the application design and installation of electrical equipment, control circuits and safety-related systems for furnaces which are operated with solid, liquid or gaseous fuels and their ancillary equipment. It specifies requirements to meet the operating conditions of furnaces, to reduce the hazards of combustion and to protect the heated systems from damage, for example by overheating. This European Standard may be used as a basis for requirements for the electrical equipment of furnaces that do not fall within its scope. This standard specifies particular requirements for the management of functional safety. Seagoing vessels and offshore installations are subject to international maritime law and thus are not within the scope of this standard. These requirements may be applied to such installations. The requirements in this standard do not apply to electrical equipment for: - non-electrically heated appliances and burner control systems for household and similar purposes; - furnaces that use technologies for the direct conversion of thermal into electrical energy; - combustion chambers of non-stationary engines and turbines; - central oil supply systems for individual heating appliances; - combustion systems for solid fuels for household heating purposes with a rated thermal output of up to 1 MW; - furnaces used for heating process fluids and gases in chemical plants. The standard differs from DIN EN 50156-1 (VDE 0116-1):2016-03 as follows: a) harmonization of definitions with the new version of EN 61508; b) review and update of normative references; c) essential changes in 4.1 and Clause 10; d) EN 50156-3 will not be prepared. The furnaces and electrical equipment addressed in this standard may, for example, be part of the following systems: - water heating systems; - steam boiler systems (steam and hot water generators) and waste heat boilers. The requirements of this standard apply accordingly to the electrical equipment of electrically heated steam boilers. Seagoing vessels and offshore installations are subject to international maritime law and are thus outside the scope of this standard. These requirements may be applied to such installations; - hot air generators; - hot gas generators; - heat exchanger systems; - combustion chambers of stationary turbines; - application of the requirements of this standard is recommended provided no other standards apply to combined heat and power (CHP) plants. This standard may also be used as a reference for the requirements for the electrical equipment of thermal processing plants.
