This standard specifies the initial, start of life dimensional, optical, mechanical and environmental performance requirements of a fully installed splice closure. This type of closures constitute an essential part of the fibre optics cabling known as "next generation access" for national broadband coverage. The fragile and humidity-sensitive fibre-optical connections are protected with these closures. The standard refers to standards for optical fibres (IEC 60793) and optical fibre cables (IEC 60794) and to standards regarding performance (IEC 61753-1) and test and measurement procedures (IEC 61300). The responsible committee is DKE/UK 412.2 "Komponenten für Kommunikationskabelanlagen" ("Components for communication cabling systems") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
