This Part 2 of the European standard series EN 50598 gives specifications for the energy efficiency assessment of power drive and motor systems for applications in the performance range from 0,12 kW to 1 000 kW. It also proposes a procedure for the characterization of the most energy efficient solution for the so-called extended product of a motor drive system and driven equipment. This standard presents a methodology for determining the losses for power drive and motor systems as well as complete power drive modules. It specifies efficiency classes for these systems (IES classes) or the converter (IE classes), respectively, and defines limit values and test methods for their classification. The determination of system losses is based on a semi analytic model (SAM) approach which enables characterization of the overall efficiency on the basis of the architecture of the motor drive system, the speed/load profile and the load profiles of the applications. Part 1 of the series gives a general description of this approach intended for people setting energy efficiency standards for power driven equipment such as pumps or fans. The responsible committee is DKE/K 226 "Ausrüstung von Starkstromgeräten und -anlagen mit elektronischen Betriebsmitteln" ("Equipment of power circuit devices and power installations with electronic equipment") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
