Overview

The demand for energy management systems is increasing due to the transition from fossil fuels and nuclear energy to energy generation using renewable energy sources, and the associated decentralization. As a suitable standard for home and building management is in preparation, this document specifies how groups of products from different manufacturers can exchange information with home and building/customer energy management systems located in a home network or the cloud. This document focuses on the interoperability of household appliances and describes the necessary control and monitoring. It specifies a set of functions for household and similar electrical appliances. In addition to energy management, the functions in this document include main use cases for remote control and monitoring. The EN 50631 series of standards ensures interoperability in the exchange of information between different household appliances in residential buildings. This document specifies data models for interoperable connected household appliances. The data models are derived from a logical decomposition of use cases into functional blocks, which in turn were implemented by abstract actions on the data model itself. This document is part of the EN 50631 series of standards, which defines the exchange of information between smart household appliances and management systems in residential and other buildings with energy management. This document does not cover safety requirements. Safety requirements have been introduced in the EN 60335 series of standards. The standard differs from DIN EN 50631-1 (VDE 0705-631-1):2018-12 as follows: a) simplification of adoption of the standard series through logical document structure; b) ensuring interoperability through a more precise, neutral definition of the information and sequences to be exchanged; c) more neutral wording of the requirements and description of the information to be exchanged at a general level, so that mapping to different data models and languages is possible; d) extension of use cases and data models to heating, ventilation, and cooling devices to enable a holistic view of energy management in residential buildings/locations; e) definition of possible transport protocols to ensure a higher degree of interoperability; f) focus on energy management; g) preparation for further developments.
