This part of IEC 60079 serves as a guide for classification of gases and vapours. It describes the test method for measurement of the maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) for gas- or vapour-air mixtures under normal conditions of temperature and pressure, and therewith permits classification into appropriate explosion groups. However, this test method described does not take into account a possible influence of obstacles on the safe gap. Furthermore, this standard describes the test method for the determination of the ignition temperature of chemically pure vapours or gases mixed with air under atmospheric pressure. The responsible Committee is K 241 "Schlagwetter- und explosionsgeschützte elektrische Betriebsmittel" ("Electrical apparatus for potentially explosive atmospheres") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
