This standard applies to electrical appliances and machines for domestic use and commercial use. Appliances in the domestic environment are appliances for typical household applications. They may also be used by non-expert users for typical household applications in shops, offices, and other similar working environments, on farms, by guests in hotels, motels, and other typical residential environments, and in bed and breakfast establishments. The domestic environment includes the dwelling and its associated buildings, the garden, and so on. Appliances and machines intended for use by professionals and/or trained persons in shops, small businesses, or agriculture, and appliances and machines designated for commercial use by lay persons are within the scope of this standard. Battery-operated appliances and other appliances operated by direct current are also within the scope of this standard. This standard specifies requirements for the safety of electrical appliances and machines for domestic use and for commercial use. The rated voltage of these appliances and machines shall not exceed 250 V for single-phase appliances and machines and 480 V for other appliances and machines. This standard addresses the reasonably foreseeable hazards posed by appliances and machines, taking into account all persons concerned. Requirements for appliances and machines intended for use by professionals and/or instructed persons in shops, small businesses or in agriculture, and requirements for appliances and machines designated for commercial use by lay persons are listed in Annex ZE of the standard. The standard does not take into account children playing with the equipment, the use of the equipment by children under 3 years of age, or the use of the equipment by children aged 3 to 8 years without supervision. This standard does not apply to: - audio, video, and similar electronic equipment covered by DIN EN 62368-1 (VDE 0868-1); - workstation computers and similar devices to which DIN EN 62368-1 (VDE 0868-1) applies; - devices for medical purposes to which DIN EN 60601-1 (VDE 0750-1) applies; - hand-held motor-operated electric tools to which the standards of the DIN EN 60745-1 (VDE 0740-1) series apply; and - transportable motor-operated electric tools to which the standards of the DIN EN 61029 (VDE 0740) series apply.
