This part of IEC 60904 applies to the following photovoltaic devices for terrestrial applications: - solar cells with or without a protective cover; - sub-assemblies of solar cells; - modules; and - systems. This standard has been prepared to relate the performance evaluation of PV devices to a general spectral distribution of terrestrial solar reference irradiance. This standard therefore contains a spectral distribution of solar reference irradiance and the principles in this standard apply to tests with natural and simulated sunlight. The spectral distribution of terrestrial solar reference irradiance in this standard is given to classify solar simulators according to the spectral performance requirements of IEC 60904-9. The standard also describes essential measurement principles for determining the electrical output power of PV devices. The responsible committee is DKE/K 373 "Photovoltaische Solarenergie-Systeme" ("Photovoltaic solar power systems") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
