This part of the IEC 61131 series of standards defines the technology of a digital point-to-point communication interface for small sensors and actuators - SDCI (commonly known as IO-LinkTM) - that extends the conventional interfaces of digital inputs and outputs, as defined in IEC 61131-2, by a point-to-point communication link. This technology enables the transmission of parameters to devices and the transmission of diagnostic information from the devices to the automation system. This technology is mainly intended for simple sensors and actuators in factory automation that use small, cost-effective microcontrollers. The responsible body is DKE/K 962 "SPS" ("PLC") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
