Overview
This standard contains the requirements for data communication between maritime electronic instruments, navigation and radiocommunication equipment when interconnected via an appropriate system. This part of the International Standard series IEC 61162 supports the one-way serial data transmission from a single talker to one or more listeners. This data may include information such as position, speed, water depth, etcetera. The significant modifications with respect to the previous edition concern the sentences given in the standard. NMEA 0183 version 4.00 of the National Marine Electronics Association has been considered. The responsible committee is K 738 "Elektronische Navigationsinstrumente" ("Electronic navigation equipment") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
