The purpose of this part of IEC 61300 is to describe the assessment of the corrosive effects of atmospheres polluted with sulphur dioxide on fibre optic devices. The procedure is only suitable for comparative purposes. It can be considered a general corrosion test, but which does not predict the behavior of the devices in use. Thus, the standard offers security of investment for manufacturers and users and provides defined data regarding the testing for testing laboratories and manufacturers. The responsible body is DKE/UK 412.7 "LWL-Verbindungstechnik und passive optische Komponenten" ("Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive optic components") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
This document replaces DIN EN 61300-2-28:1998-07 .
