Overview
This part of IEC 61746 provides procedures for calibrating single-mode optical time domain reflectometers (OTDR). It only covers OTDR measurement errors and uncertainties. This standard does not cover correction of the OTDR response. OTDR measuring instruments are essential tools for documentation of and trouble-shooting on optical transmission lines for communication networks. Due to this, estimation of measurement uncertainties is particularly important. The responsible Committee is K 412 "Kommunikationskabel (Kabel, Leitungen, Wellenleiter, Lichtwellenleiter, Komponenten, Zubehör und Anlagetechnik für die Nachrichten- und Informationsübertragung)" ("Communication cables (Cables, wires, waveguides, fibre optics, components, equipment and installation technology for the transmission of news and information)") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
