This part of the IEC 61753 series contains the minimum initial test and measurement requirements and severities which a fibre optical fuse shall satisfy in order to be categorised as meeting the requirements of single mode fibre plug-receptacle style optical fuse used in controlled environments. Optical performance specified in this document relates to plug-receptacle style configuration fuses only. The optical fuse is a passive device which produces a controlled, permanent, signal blocking at a predetermined power threshold in an optical fibre transmission line. The standard contains the minimum requirements, details as well as the severity levels for 18 different tests. Thus, the standard provides manufacturers and users with investment security and test laboratories and manufacturers with detailed information on testing. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 412.7 "LWL-Verbindungstechnik und passive optische Komponenten" ("Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive optical components") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
