This part of IEC 62133 specifies requirements and tests for the safe operation of gas-tight secondary cells and batteries with alkaline electrolytes when used as intended and in reasonably foreseeable misuse, which are used in portable devices (for example, cell phones, laptops). It contains requirements and tests for safe operation. In contrast to the previous editions, this Part 1 deals exclusively with batteries with a nickel-based electrochemical system. Specifications for lithium-based systems are included in Part 2. The responsible committee is DKE/K 371 "Akkumulatoren" ("Accumulators") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
