This Part 1 of the International Standard series specifies the minimum operational and performance requirements, test methods and required test results for Class B shipborne equipment of the automatic identification system (AIS) using carrier-sense time division multiple access (CSTDMA) techniques. The standard is applicable for AIS equipment used on craft that are not covered by the mandatory carriage requirement of AIS under SOLAS Chapter V. The modifications with respect to the 1. edition comprise the update of the reference to the relevant recommendation of the ITU M.1371-3 with some consequential small changes, the removal of the option of providing short safety-related messages and modification of the frequencies used for testing in some of the test methods. The responsible Committee is K 738 "Elektronische Navigationsinstrumente" ("Electronic navigation equipment") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
