Overview

Thermal protection systems are based on the principle of protecting or monitoring vulnerable machine parts against excessive temperatures. This requires the selection of suitable thermal protection equipment that is appropriate for both the type of protection required and the machine part to be protected. This part of the series of standards does not provide details on the available protection methods and does not specify the protection method to be used in individual cases; instead, it specifies the temperature of the protected parts that should not be exceeded in the event of a fault or misuse of the machine. This part of the series of standards specifies requirements relating to the use of thermal protectors and thermal detectors incorporated into the stator windings or placed in other suitable positions in induction machines in order to protect them against serious damage due to thermal overloads. This part of the series of standards does not apply to direct protection of the rotor winding, the protection of bearings and other mechanical parts, or protection methods to be provided for specific applications. The standard differs from DIN EN 60034-11 (VDE 0530-11):2005-04 as follows: a) the additional specification of winding temperature limits for temperature class 200 (N), b) the increased limits of maximum winding temperatures for overloads with rapid variation, c) the clarification that the motor winding may be permanently damaged after it has been exposed to temperatures according to Table 2; d) clarification of the scope of application; e) a clarification of the definition of indirect thermal protection; f) conversion of Note 3 in Clause 6 into normal text, including changes in wording; g) the inclusion of Note 3 in Clause 5 in Clause 2; h) a clarification on the test methods for larger motors in 8.3. Typical areas of application for this document include temperature monitors and temperature sensors installed in the stator windings of induction machines to protect them against serious damage caused by thermal overload. Specifically, the document applies to three-phase induction motors that comply with IEC 60034-1 and IEC 60034-12 and are intended for a rated voltage up to 1 000 V.
