Overview

This standard deals with the safety of electric foot warmers and heating mats for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V. This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such as electrical, mechanical, and thermal hazards, as well as fire and radiation hazards from electrical equipment that is operated properly in accordance with the instructions for use. It also covers unusual situations that are nevertheless likely to occur in practice and takes the manner in which electromagnetic phenomena can affect the safe operation of appliances into account. This standard does not apply, for example, to appliances specifically intended for use under medical supervision, electric blankets, electric underblankets, and heating pads (IEC 60335-2-17) and electrically heated carpets (IEC 60335-2-106).
