Overview

DIN EN IEC 61098 (VDE 0493-2-2) applies to contamination warning assemblies, meters and monitors used for the monitoring of radioactive contamination on the surface of personnel whether they be clothed or not. The standard is applicable only to that type of equipment where the user takes no action other than to present himself and/or his hands and feet to the detectors. It is applicable to the monitoring of the whole body (including the face), hands and feet but parts of this standard may be used for equipment designed for the monitoring of radioactive contamination on the hands and/or feet only. The standard differs from DIN EN 61098 (VDE 0493-2-2): 2008-02 as follows: a) as an alternative to small area sources, large area sources have been added, which are used for test procedures relating to the change in responsiveness with the source position, the effective device detection probability, the detection limit, and the change in responsiveness with energy; b) the detection limit corresponds to that specified in ISO 11929; c) descriptions of type F and type S influencing factors have been added; d) compliance with IEC 62706 is supported for requirements relating to environmental conditions, mechanical requirements, electromagnetic compatibility requirements, and test procedures; e) descriptions of overhead detectors and probes (friskers) have been added; f) the images have been simplified to facilitate understanding of the relationship between the position of the detector and the response capability, as well as between the detector surface and the source; g) the structure has been changed, the annexes replaced, and the text of the standard has been editorially revised. The tests described in the standard are type tests or unit tests for characterizing the essential properties of the monitors. If requested by the customer, additional tests can be performed to further characterize the sensitive volume. In order to cover the entire human body, it is usually necessary to use several detector channels. This results in gaps between the active areas of the detectors, in which the detection capability for contamination on the body is significantly lower than in the centre of the detectors. The effects of these gaps on the performance of the monitor can be reduced by combining the signals from neighbouring detectors.
