Overview

This document deals with the safety requirements of switch mode power supply units and transformers for switch mode power supply units. Transformers containing electronic circuits are also covered by this standard. Safety includes electrical, thermal, and mechanical aspects. IEC 61558-2-16 applies to: a) switch mode power supply units that contain safety transformers that provide SELV, PELV, or FELV AC or DC output voltages, or a combination thereof, in accordance with IEC 61140 and IEC 60364-4-41 for use in household and other consumer products, with the exception of products covered by the IEC 61347, IEC 61204-7, IEC 60065, IEC 60950-1, and the IEC 62368 series of standards; b) switch mode power supply units intended for use in household or other consumer products with a maximum output voltage not exceeding 1 000 V AC or 1 415 V smoothed DC, intended for use in household and other consumer products, with the exception of the products described in a) and products covered by the IEC 61347 series, IEC 61204-7, IEC 60065, IEC 60950-1, and the IEC 62368 series of standards; c) IEC 61558-2-16 may be applied to transformers for switch mode power supply units (see Annex BB). IEC 61558-2-16 does not apply to: motor-generator units; uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems in accordance with IEC 62040 (Part 1 or the series of standards); switch mode power supply units in accordance with IEC 61204-7 (that is, low-voltage power supply units, DC outputs, power characteristics) and DC power and distribution network equipment, as well as switch mode power supply units for applications in accordance with IEC 61010-1 and IEC 60601-1; lamp control systems in accordance with the IEC 61347 series of standards; external circuits and their components intended for connection to the input and output terminals of switch mode power supply units and transformers for switch mode power supply units. The standard differs from DIN EN 61558-2-16 (VDE 0570-2-16):2014-06 as follows: a) adjustment of the structure and references in accordance with IEC 61558-1:2017; b) definitions of the various voltage characteristics; c) partial discharge and description of structures moved to IEC 61558-1:2017; d) alternative method for dimensioning air gaps; e) removal of the requirements for homogeneous field conditions.
