This document is part of the IEC 61757 series of standards, which deals with fibre optic sensors. Generic specifications for fibre optic sensors are defined in IEC 61757. The individual parts of the IEC 61757 series of standards are numbered IEC 61757 -M-T, where M denotes the measurement and T denotes the technology of the fibre optic sensor. The IEC 61757-1 -T series of standards deals with strain measurements. This part of IEC 61757 defines detailed specifications for distributed strain measurements with a fibre optic sensor, also known as fibre optic distributed strain sensing. It is applicable to distributed strain sensing systems (DSS) based on spontaneous or stimulated Brillouin scattering in the optical fibre sensor (strain sensitive element), that is, to sensors capable of measuring absolute strain. This document specifies the most important DSS performance parameters and defines the procedures for their determination. The standard contains the fundamentals for measurement, the description of the measurement setup, calibration and implementation, documentation and evaluation of the measurement. There are no restrictions on the scope of application of the document. The standard increases investment security for manufacturers and users through its application and provides testing laboratories and manufacturers with defined specifications for testing.
