Overview

This part of IEC 61820 describes requirements for AGL systems including power supplies, transformation of energy, cables, and any electrical component utilized to produce the light intended to be used as a visual aid for air and ground navigation based on IEC 61820-1, complemented with series circuit specific topics. Local/national regulations may differ from these standard provisions. The series circuit is usually operated with constant current and a load-dependent, variable voltage. The protective measures for series circuits according to this document are adapted to this particular power supply concept and the extremely long cables in the field. They are based in principle on an IT network concept (potential-free and isolated from earth and the rest of the network) and protection against direct contact with a live part. This applies at least to the primary circuit and the power supply with safety extra-low voltage (SELV) or the power supply with protective extra-low voltage (PELV) with safe separation, which supply power to the beacon or other loads of the series circuit. In view of the potential hazards to aviation, automatic shutdown of the AGL system in the event of an electrical failure is not generally required (see the details specified in IEC 61820-1).
