This document specifies a generic structure with which the properties of industrial-process measurement and control equipment shall be organized so that they can be exchanged in a machine-readable format. The document also describes a basic structure for further documents that define the attributes of the IEC Common Data Dictionary (IEC CDD). This document does not define semantic features (terms of the IEC Common Data Dictionary), but only the generic structure for organizing the semantic features. The definition of semantic features for specific industrial-process measurement and control equipment is provided in other parts of the series of standards. A typical application example is the transfer of data from measuring equipment from one form to another. For example, the technical data of a measuring device may exist at the manufacturer's premises as two separate sets for presentation on paper or in electronic form. The user generally requires the same data for factory standards, engineering, or commercial databases. In most cases, however, the data cannot be automatically reused, as each application has its own specific data storage formats. A second problem that encumbers the reuse of technical data is the content of the product descriptions themselves. There is little agreement among manufacturers with regard to what information a technical data sheet should contain or how it should be structured. This document aims to address these problems by defining a generic structure and its content for industrial measurement and control equipment.
